Steve Womack "Headed" for Hypocrisy

Press Release

Date: April 13, 2012
Location: Springdale, AR

On Monday, Congressman Steve Womack toured the Head Start facility in Springdale then posed for photos with children. Photos of Womack reading the children were posted on his campaign Facebook page and House Twitter account.

The Springdale facility Rep. Womack visted is one of the many Head Start facilities in Arkansas that he voted to cut funding for by way of H.R. 1. The bill would have dramatically cut necessary funding for programs in Arkansas that assist the working poor, children, and elderly.

Under H.R. 1:

* Arkansas's Head Start program would immediately be cut by $10 million this year. This is enough funding to serve roughly 1,900 children in our state.
* $60 million would be cut from the Pell Grant program in Arkansas, affecting all 94,000 higher education students in the state currently using this program.
* $19 million would immediately have been cut from the Community Development Block Grants, directly impacting local governments throughout Arkansas.

"The idea that Womack would tour a facility, whose funding he wanted to cut funding to the tune of $10 million, is disgusting and dishonorable" said Ken Aden, (D-Russelville) Congressional Candidate running against Womack.

Aden continued, "Womack is the archetype for dishonesty in Congress. While families in this district go to bed hungry, our member of Congress continues to do the bidding of the wealthy corporations and their political action committees that helped put him in office while turning a blind eye to the suffering right here at home that we all know he's seen while having his picture taken with his victims," Aden continued.

According to the hunger relief charity Feeding America, food insecurity and hunger is a significant problem in many of the counties contained in Arkansas's Third Congressional District. In Benton County alone, Feeding America estimates that 28,470 individuals suffer from food insecurity. In Pope County, the number is as high as 39,960.
